Blue parts washer 1The design of any production parts cleaning system involves matching the parts washer with output of the machining operations. The goal is to minimize operator handling so the system needs to have the ability to feed parts to the parts washer directly.

SYSTEM DESIGN

We recently worked with a manufacturer that wanted to utilize a conveyorized belt type washer to clean machined tubes in multiple diameters and lengths. The tubes needed to be orientated as they came off the machining operation and into a cartridge feeder. The parts were then fed on to a conveyor belt style washer. Three separate processes were to be employed: wash stage, rinse stage (with rust inhibitor), and a final heated dry chamber.

CUSTOM FIXTURING

The project now presented several different design issues. The first requirement is a feeder cartridge system designed to orientate the tubes into a horizontal position. Parts would be queued up for a special fixture mounted on the conveyor belt of the parts washer. The fixture on the belt would position the parts for maximum exposure to the spray jets located in the wash stage. The parts were next conveyed through the rinse stage with a rust preventative in the solution. The tubes needed to be fixtured slightly lower on one end to allow them to drain which would assist the drying stage. The parts were coming off machining at the rate of one every four seconds. This meant the number of special belt fixtures would be determined by production throughput at a line speed that allows sufficient exposure to the solution spray to properly clean.

MAKING IT ALL WORK

As a service to the customer, it was decided that all testing would be completed in our facility. We relied on receiving test parts, photos, and videos of the operation to complete the design. This type of process design is how we make our living. It often requires our years of experience to properly identify the correct processes and procedures to satisfy the application. Offering customer’s solutions has its rewards once the task is accomplished. We are always grateful for opportunities to develop parts washers for specific process solutions.

Removal of oils from the solution

If you need to remove oils and greases in large quantities, the washer needs to have some type of
removal device. Daily oil removal with disk or belt style skimmers is the standard with a moderate
amount of oil in the solution.
Ideally, a timer can be used to operate skimmers after the washer has not run for several hours. This is preferably after 6 to 8 hours. This allows the oil to be released from the solution and float to the surface to be removed.
Coalescer can remove large amounts of oil from solution as they also provide additional filtration media. The washer detergent you use also plays a role in the oil removal. Choosing the right detergent (one that demulsifies) will allow the oils to separate and be skimmed. We can help you make the right decision for your parts washing.
From choosing the right system (cost, convenience, maintenance and working life), to choosing the best detergent for your aqueous part washing, please contact us for any additional help.
When lager volumes of oil enter the washer solution, a coalescer may be necessary. This is a separate unit which pumps the solution from the wash tank at a rate of 2 to 10 gallons per minute.

40 Gallon Heated Ultrasonic Parts Washer

Large Ultrasonic Cleaning Tank

Engine and Head Rebuilding

Although we are strong marketers of jet spray cabinet parts washers we have calls from shops that want to clean larger parts that have hard to reach blind holes and crevices. There are larger ultrasonic tanks which are now available that can provide the capacity to clean these parts.

Units holding 40 gallon of heated water with a good detergent and coupled with intense ultrasonic action will scrub every port and small entries in blocks, heads, transmissions and other parts.

Things to know about ultrasonic tanks

Traditional ultrasonic systems use a single frequency to create ultrasonic cavitations. An effective way to clean, but single frequency systems create tank dead spots because of naturally occurring standing waves. Sweep cleaning technology solves this problem. Sweep cleaning technology delivers a more thorough, effective ultrasonic cleaning system.

What Is Ultrasonic Sweep Cleaning?

Ultrasonic sweep cleaning “sweeps” multiple ultrasonic frequencies through a single ultrasonic tank. This sweeping controls the creation of standing waves, allowing no single frequency to resonate in the tank, eliminating the root cause of standing waves, and tank dead spots.

What Ultrasonic Sweep Cleaning Means To You

When you use ultrasonic sweep cleaning technology, every volume inside your tank is creating ultrasonic cavitations, meaning that every item you put in the tank is cleaned across every part of its surface. No dead spots.

The Ultrasonic Sweep Cleaning Advantage

The advantage of ultrasonic sweep cleaning system is thorough and efficient cleaning. Because every space in the ultrasonic tank is actively creating ultrasonic cavitations, you efficiently optimize immersion time required to clean all surfaces.

Equipping a shop with this technology can set you apart from the competition. From my days of oil testing we found the direst engines happen just after overhaul. Ultrasonic parts cleaning of fine oil ports and passages go a long way toward a successful rebuild.

Stuck on the End of a Power Washer Gun

maxresdefault

I still marvel at a business that cleans engine blocks and transmissions with a high pressure washer. Sure the initial equipment is less expensive than a parts washer cabinet but other cost mount up and it soon is a non issue.

Standing on the end of a spray gun is wasted time. Needless to say the environmental liability issue in today’s world comes into play. Taking the greasy parts “out back” or letting the dirty water run down the parking lot is placing a business in jeopardy.  Environment agencies do not play nice with this.

Economy-parts-washer PS

Contrast this with placing items in a cabinet parts washer, turning on the wash timer, and doing other tasks during the cleaning cycle just makes common sense.

The excuse of “can’t afford” goes out the window when the cost of lost time is factored in. Take the monthly cost of a lease to own and calculate the savings of a hot jet spray parts washer versus the pressure washer. The math is simple and the decision should be easy.

You can even rent to own and easily pay off the machine with labor savings.  Prices start as low as $3,295

Water based automatic parts washing, called aqueous cleaning, has been around for many years.   In the early nineties many companies started switching from solvent based cleaning to aqueous to meet environmental concerns.  If you read the MSDS sheets even the mild solvents are listed as carcinogenic.

heavy duty parts washer

The systems are capable of cleaning very small parts as well as large pieces up to several tons. The rebuilding of large components such as oil field equipment and construction machinery engines are cleaned in cabinets with rotating turntables. The washers use high volume pumps spraying jets of hot detergent in water.  The systems have the capacity of cleaning pieces weighing 10 tons or more and are limited only by cabinet size.  The water based washers can be envisioned as having a large dishwasher for dirty parts.  They are used to remove oil and chips in a metal working environment or used for heavy degreasing.

line parts washer 1 ultrasonic parts washer

DIFFERENT SYLES REQUIRED FOR VOLUME AND MATERIALS

Aqueous parts washers come in four basic categories.  The jet spray styles can be in a cabinet or conveyorized belt or in hanging tunnels.  Immersion units can have a platform moving the parts up and down in a heated solution or they may be simply submerged in the solution with the water being turbulated with a high volume pump.  Small, delicate, or parts with small blind holes are cleaned with sound waves creating a cleaning action in ultrasonic tanks.  The systems uses detergents with water heated to various temperatures and controlled thermostatically.  The ultrasonics frequency will be determined by the contamination and type of metal or other material that is being cleaned.

cleaner

WATCH

The basic factors controlling the efficiency of cleaning systems are outlined with the ACRONIM WATCH.   The factors are Water, Agitation, Time, Chemical, and Heat.   Water with detergents becomes the cleaning solution, and heat activates the chemical detergents and the time factor is determined by how dirty the parts are and type of spray or other agitation employed by the washer.

At Quality Systems we specialize in assisting customers in matching their cleaning needs to the best system available.

Please call us and we will help evaluate the cleaning process that can convert your operation from solvent based cleaning to safe and environmentally friendly water based cleaning.
